Hello, I’m Maggie Kerr. Joy asked me to tell you a little bit about myself, about what she calls my backstory. ’Tis not a pretty story.
My earliest memories, once I unlocked them, are of Da. He was a braw Scotsman come to the colonies of America to better his future. Da loved adventure. He moved us; Mama, Reggie, Catherine, little Donald, and me to the frontier near Fort McCord. Da worked hard from sunup to dark, working the land behind our oxen and planting for our future. He loved working land he could claim as his own.
Then the war came, the French and Indians joined together against we British citizens in the colonies. Da feared what might happen, and I know it cost him dearly, but he moved us to Fort McCord. ’Twas not a proper fort, being a single blockhouse and no stockade. Still, ’twas the largest building I had ever seen. Surely, we would be safe in such a large, thick building with the other families who had gathered there.
And so we were until the morning when war cries broke the silence and my world was forever changed. Da and Reggie were gone, they had left to fetch more supplies with several of the other men. In no time, the attacking Indians had broken into the blockhouse and pulled me, Catherine, and Donald from our upper room.
My last sight of them and Mama was as a Lenni Lenape warrior dragged me away. I was eleven years old. It would be seven years until I gained my freedom. Seven years of learning to survive among the Indians. Seven years of staying strong. Seven years of forgetting those who abandoned me to my fate.
