Hi everyone! My name is Melanie Hutton, and I’m a forensic anthropologist. I grew up in the small town of Valley Springs, Indiana. My parents weren’t exactly what you’d call loving. They cared more about money and reputation than their own child. In elementary school, I started hanging out with my neighbor Allison Cooper. She was my best friend, and her family and house were a haven for me. I found the acceptance and inclusion I’d desperately needed.

Then tragedy hit. When we were fifteen, Allison and I were abducted and beaten. I got away, but she didn’t. When I escaped the cabin to find help, it was the last time I ever saw her. But it got worse, my parents didn’t support me, and Allison’s brother Jason never listened to me and accused me of leaving his sister to die. I not only lost my best friend, but the family who had always loved me unconditionally; unlike my own.

People tried to force me to tell them what happened, but my brain shut down due to the trauma. I left Valley Springs to get away from the pain and went to live with my aunt.

I’ve struggled for years to remember details, but the memories remained locked inside my mind.

I recently left my high-profile job in Dallas, Texas, and returned to my hometown in hopes of forcing my memories to the forefront of my brain. I desperately want to find my friend’s body and finally have closure. And maybe, just maybe, discover love with the man I had a teenage crush on. Assuming Jason can finally put his accusations and anger aside and finally be willing to listen.
