The Story BEFORE The Story

My Story Before the Story ~ Irelynn Brady ~ Love Under Construction

Hello, my name is Irelynn Brady. Joy asked me to tell you a bit about my backstory and a memory that became a turning point for me. I guess I would have to say it was the time my mom lost her job at the factory, because the entire incident taught me a lot about faith.

We never had much growing up. My dad left when I was young, leaving my mom to raise me single-handedly. We struggled, and while there was never much food to eat or clothes to wear, there was one thing I never lacked. The love of a caring and faithful mom.

After a lot of searching, my mom found us a trailer to rent. To say it was dilapidated was an understatement. The ancient mobile home had seen better days, with its huge gash in the roof from a tree falling into it before we moved in. The heater never worked very well, and the first thing we had to do was give it a thorough cleaning, as mice infestation, along with filthy former residents, made the place nearly inhabitable. Yet, the rent was affordable, and Mom said all it would take is a little “elbow grease” and the place would be our home.

She was right about the place becoming a home to us. She underestimated the amount of “elbow grease” it would take to make it that way, however.

A few months later right after I turned fourteen, I found Mom crying in the kitchen when I got home from school. The factory where she worked closed and 100 employees lost their jobs. Eviction was in our future.

We’d been through a lot and we always managed, but seeing Mom sobbing, her face in her hands and her shoulders shaking, frightened me. She rarely cried, and never sobbed. Would we make it through this latest turn of events? What if Mom gave up? What if we had to live at the homeless shelter again? The “what-ifs” weaved their way through my mind. Hope seemed distant.

All we had in this world was each other and Mom’s faith. She not only talked about God, but she lived her life for Him. Before this day, I couldn’t really understand how she could rely on Someone who constantly let us down. From an early age, she taught me about the Lord, and I knew a lot about Him, but I still couldn’t understand why He allowed our lives to be such a struggle. Had He forgotten about us?

Mom and I prayed. For guidance. For wisdom. For somewhere to live. And Mom, as she always did, said the words she’d said from the time I was little. “He is faithful. Always faithful.”

“Even this time?” I whispered.

“Even this time, Irelynn. We must trust He will see us through this trial.”

My faith took a turning point as we sat in the trailer house kitchen. I learned that day what it really means to trust the Lord with every fiber of one’s being.

I’ll be honest with you. I’m not sure how I will ever be the kind of mom to the twins that my mom is to me. She was and still is my hero. A woman of strong faith and a woman who never gave up, even when the odds were stacked against us, which was often.

But, like Mom always says, He is faithful. Always faithful. And I trust He will help me raise the twins in a manner which glorifies Him.
